Sonic the Fighters was developed by Sega-AM2 and published by Sega. The game producer is Yu Suzuki. The game director is Hiroshi Kataoka. The character designer is Masahiro Sugiya. The composers are Maki Morrow, and Takenobu Mitsuyoshi. Sonic the Fighters was built on a number of platforms including Arcade, GameCube, and Playstation 2. In Japan, Sonic the Fighters was released on June 1996. In North America, the game was launched on July 1996. In Europe, the game was debuted on August 1996. Sonic the Fighters can be played as single player or multiplayer. The menu and character is controlled by the joystick.

Sonic the Fighters is one of the fighting games in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. The original game title was included in the releases of Sonic Gems Collection in North America and Europe.

The storyline of Sonic the Fighters begins with Doctor Robotnik’s release of Death Egg 2. When Sonic and Tails found out about Death Egg 2, they immediately began their quest to stop him. However, the new airship that Sonic and Tails ride in can only support 1 passenger and they need 8 chaos emeralds to defeat Eggman. The 8 wielder of the Chaos Emeralds participate in a combat with each winner taking chaos emeralds. The participants of the battle tournament includes knuckles, amy, bark, espio, fang, bean and sonic the hedgehog. After they arrive at Death Egg, Metal Sonic appear before them. When they successfully defeat Metal Sonic, Death Egg begins to fall part as Dr. Eggman poses his challenges to the victor. In Sonic the Fighters, player will only be given a chance to defeat Eggman.

The heroes that posses the chaos emeralds are playable. Super Sonic can be played in story mode. Sonic the Fighters has hacked characters such as Honey the Cat, 3 Eggman prototypes, and Metal Sonic.

The overall goal is to deplete the rival’s health bar. The enemy’s health bar can be depleted by whichever form of attack including punching, kicking and spin dashing. The combat will come to an end when the HP becomes empty. If the timer reaches zero, the player with the highest HP will be the winner. If you are the winner, you will progress to fight with another rival.

The game control panel uses the AM2 3-button joystick to control the character movement. The buttons on the right handle will execute the fighting commands on the opponents. To walk, you should tilt the joystick forward. To back away, you should tilt the joystick away from the rivals. If you want the character to run, tap the joystick twice. If you bang into a wall, you can walk right up the wall and jump off from the top. If you want to perform backstep, tap the joystick twice away from your rivals. If you want the character to jump, you should tilt the joystick upward. To duck from an opponent, tilt the joystick downward. If you want to character to roll after getting knocked over, tilt the joystick up and down. You can punch your opponent by tapping on the punch button. Similarly, if you want to kick your opponent, tap on the kick button.

The single player game has ten matches which involves 8 normal opponents, Metal Sonic and Eggman. The catch of the game is to defeat the opponents within 15 seconds to access the good ending.
